David Gohel
David Gohel is the founder of ArData, a French company providing R expertise, R training and consulting in data sciences. He is the author of R packages, most popular are officer, flextable, rvg and ggiraph. He is a data scientist and software engineer. His professional experiences led him to face many challenges related to the data of organizations, which he has always managed with solutions involving R software.

officeverse: Creating Word and PowerPoint documents with R

The officer package has been developed to facilitate the production of Word documents and PowerPoint presentations with R. The initial project was to offer an alternative solution to SAS ODS for tabular and graphical reports produced in Word for one of my clients. The range of functionalities has expanded, and some very interesting extensions have been created. There is the officedown package that increases the layout capabilities of R Markdown when the output is Word, the rvg package to create editable vector graphics, the flextable package to make nice tables. In this presentation, you will see how to use the package to produce PowerPoint presentations and Word documents. Its role as a foundation for other packages and new documentation will be discussed. It will also be an opportunity for David to present the officedown package for the first time.

Paul Bürkner
Paul is a statistician currently working as an Independent Junior Research Group Leader at the Cluster of Excellence SimTech at the University of Stuttgart (Germany). He is the author of the R package brms and member of the Stan Development Team. Previously, he studied Psychology and Mathematics at the Universities of Münster and Hagen (Germany) and did his PhD in Münster about optimal design and Bayesian data analysis. Paul has also worked as a Postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Computer Science at Aalto University (Finland).

brms: Bayesian Regression Models using Stan

The brms package provides an interface to fit Bayesian generalized (non-)linear multivariate multilevel models using Stan, a C++ package for performing full Bayesian inference. The formula syntax is very similar to that of the lme4 package to provide a familiar and simple interface for performing regression analyses. A wide range of response distributions are supported, allowing users to fit – among others – linear, robust linear, count data, survival, response times, ordinal, zero-inflated, and even self-defined mixture models all in a multilevel context. Further modeling options include non-linear and smooth terms, auto-correlation structures, censored data, missing value imputation, and quite a few more. In addition, all parameters of the response distribution can be predicted in order to perform distributional regression. Multivariate models, i.e., models with multiple response variables, can be fit as well. Prior specifications are flexible and explicitly encourage users to apply prior distributions that reflect their beliefs. Model fits can easily be assessed and compared with posterior predictive checks, cross-validation, and Bayes factors.

This was the second virtual but the fifth edition of the annual conference devoted to R users in Central-Eastern Europe. This year we had a chance to gather participants from all over the world, thanks to the remote setup! We had 450 registered participants for the conference but in the end, during the week after the first published talk we observed +7.5k views and 934 total watch hours.

Awardees of Supporting grant for Women in Data Science

This Friday, during Why R? 2021 Conference, we announced awardees of Supporting grant for Women in Data Science. This was the 4th edition of the grant. In this post we present their silhouettes!

Awardees

Maja Jabłońska

Maja is currently finishing her Master’s studies in Astronomy at the University of Warsaw. A big part of her research work includes processing and analyzing observational and simulated data, as well as applying machine learning to scientific problems earlier solved with statistical approaches. She is also a member of ML in PL Association and had the opportunity of leading the 2021 ML in PL Conference. One of her goals for the upcoming years is to continue organizing similar events and initiatives, as well as helping the university community to learn and use data science in astronomy.

Agnieszka Mikołajczyk

Agnieszka Mikołajczyk graduated with a Master of Engineering degree in Automatic Control. She is an author of scientific papers, holds numerous scholarships and awards, and happily contributes to creating open repositories on GitHub. She gave talks at AI Bay Gdańsk, MLGroup Gdańsk, DataTalksClub, AggregateIntellect, and others.
Moreover, Agnieszka organizes and actively contributes to the AI4Good scientific community in her free time; she is a former organizer and a team leader at the open-source project detectwaste.ml about detecting waste in natural and urban environments. Currently, she takes part in another AI4Good project as Principal ML Researcher: HearAI for sign language recognition. Daily, she conducts her research in her grant “Detecting and overcoming bias in data with explainable artificial intelligence” Preludium, awarded by Polish National Centre. She supports the industry problems by working in the R&D NLP team at Voicelab.ai. Additionally, she co-organized Poleval 2021 (Task 1) and co-created the first Polish corpus for punctuation restoration from read text.

Katarzyna Sidorczuk

Katarzyna received the M.Sc. degree in biotechnology from the University of Wrocław in 2019. She is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree in biological sciences at the University of Wrocław. Her research focuses on bioinformatics, especially use of machine learning in prediction of peptide properties, protein localization and bacterial adhesins. She is the main developer of AmpGram and CancerGram R packages. She participates in the organization of Wrocław R Users Group (STWUR) meetings for R enthusiasts. These meetings include workshops for beginners and lectures given by people from the fields related to data science. Speaker at conferences, such as SatRday Gdańsk 2019, Why R? 2020, Data Science Summit 2020, EMBO Young Scientists’ Forum 2021.

This Friday, during Why R? 2021 Conference we announced awardees of Community award for Outstanding Community Leaders. We are thankful for every input our awardees provided for R community. You can find their biograms belows.

Dr. Hedia Tnani got her Master degree in Plant breeding from the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (IAMZ) and her Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of Barcelona. After a Postdoctoral experience at the CNRS in France and at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines, she joined the laboratory of BioInformatics, bioMathematics and bioStatistics (BIMS) at Pasteur Institute of Tunis (IPT). She’s actually a Visiting Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) where she’s searching for new drug targets to shed light on new therapeutic approaches for the treatment of leishmaniasis.She’s also the co-founder of R-Ladies Tunis, Tunis R User Group and Pyladies Tunis.

Mustafa ÇAVUŞ is a Assistant Professor at Eskisehir Technical University, Department of Statistics from Turkey. Now, he is working as post-doc researcher at MI2 Datalab in Warsaw University of Technology. His current research interest is about AutoML and explainable artificial intelligence. He likes to spend his time on organizing R events, writing R blogs on Twitter, and releasing R packages.
